Who could be a better example of self-love than the very man who has proclaimed himself the greatest of all time (at practically everything)? Yep, I’m talking about none other than trash-talking, designer-wearing, paparazzi-hating KanyeWest.
While I don’t exactly encourage you to go as far off the deep end as Yeezus has, there are a few valuable lessons we can learned from Mr. West and the way he is so deeply and beautifully devoted to none other than himself.
1. SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY
If there’s one thing we can all agree about Kanye, it’s the fact that he says what’s on his mind! When he thought Taylor didn’t deserve her award (#neverforget) and when he felt like President Bush didn’t care about black people (how could we forget?), he let it be known. While there’s definitely a balance to sharing your opinion where it hasn’t been requested, there’s so much freedom in speaking your mind.
If your job isn’t treating you fairly, tell them. If you’re being dragged into situations you don’t want to be in, speak up. And if there’s someone that you love, or don’t love anymore, let them know. There are plenty of times to hold your tongue, but a personal or professional crisis is not one of them.
2. DON’T FORGET TO SPLURGE ON YOURSELF
It’s great to be focused and disciplined in both your finances and your time, but don’t forget to go the extra mile for yourself here and there. If you’ve paid all of your bills and you’ve got some change left over, treat yourself to new shoes or dinner out. Splurging isn’t always financial either. Maybe you can splurge on the luxury of a nice bath or sleeping in on the weekend.
3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY
There’s no greater sign that you’re missing out on some TLC than being in relationships that don’t encourage your growth. Your friends should be headed in the same direction as you and your significant other should never feel like a burden. Let’s not settle in any of our relationships; whether they’re romantic or platonic. Hey, just look at Kanye. Regardless of what people may say about his relationship, he is super happy and believes he married the most beautiful woman in the world.
4. CARE LESS ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOU
We’ve all heard that our reputations are all that we have — and in a sense it is. But at the end of the day, we can’t live our lives chasing friendships and trying to make everyone else happy. Sometimes you gotta do you for the sake of doing you, boo boo! In the words of Kanye, “I just wanted people to like me more, but f-k that bro!” Well put, my brother.
5. SET HIGH GOALS FOR YOURSELF
Kanye thinks he can do anyyyything. And that’s not a bad trait to have. Back when 50 Cent was on top of the rap game, he challenged his album sales and won. Later, he tried for years to get into the fashion industry and now he can finally say he’s there. Aye kids, all I’m trying to say is that when you reach for the stars, you might land on a planet or sumn cool like that.
What’s next on Yeezy’s list? Running for president in 2020! Even though I hope to God the man is just kidding, I can’t say I wouldn’t love to watch those debates.
The point is, love yourself more than anyone else ever could! Because at the end of the day, you’re the only one that has to wake up and go to sleep with yourself for the rest of your life. And when your peers or your coworkers ask where your new found confidence came from, just say “Yeezy taught me”.
