30 Uses for Coconut Oil

We at PeekABoo PrettyGirl are HUGE fans of DIYing (doing-it-yourself) and natural remedies, so we’ve decided to share a list of 30 uses for one of the most popular oils in the DIY world today: coconut oil. All of the references below are to be used with EXTRA VIRGIN/ORGANIC/UNREFINED coconut oil – unless otherwise specified. This is due to the fact that once oil is refined, it loses many of its vitamins and other properties, thus minimizing or entirely eliminating its effects. You can tell if your coconut oil is unrefined by the smell of it. It WILL ALWAYS have a coconut-y smell. If it doesn’t, it is either refined, or probably really really really old. Also, just because an oil is organic does not always mean is has not been refined, so be sure to check the container. Please note that at room temperature, coconut oil is generally a solid, but melts easily and typically as soon as it comes in to contact with the skin. Popular places that EVCO can be purchased are Walmart, TJ Maxx, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and Trader Joes. Enjoy.

  1. Coconut oil makes a great moisturizer for lips.
  2. Coconut oil has antibacterial and antiviral properties, thus it is great for clearing skin and acne. Use a light layer of coconut oil after cleansing face to see great results and keep skin bright.
  3. Add coconut oil to your favorite smoothie for a natural energy booster.
  4. Replace coconut oil for butter or vegetable oil in nearly any recipe (ex: cake baking, on pancakes, on toast, etc (I’d recommend refined coconut oil in this position, due to the fact that unrefined/virgin oil tends to smell and taste like coconuts. No one wants a coconut flavored baked potato).
  5. Mix coconut oil, a few drops of an essential oil (ex: lavender), and some sugar to create a natural hand/body and facial scrub.
  6. Looking for an exceptional deep conditioner? Mix coconut oil with a light daily conditioner (such as Suave, Pantene, Tresemme, etc) and leave on for 30 minutes to an hour. The oil can rejuvenate damaged hair, prevent split ends, and help keep protein from leaving the hair, thus strengthening it.
  7. Coconut oil can also be used as a daily hair moisturizer. Apply to hair once a day or a few times week before bed to keep hair in good condition, shiny, and thick.
  8. Coconut oil is a natural heat protectant. If you’re looking for an alternative to your heat serum, try lightly coating your hair with coconut oil before blow-drying or flat-ironing
  9. Ingesting extra virgin coconut oil provides a ton of health benefits. Experts have said that when ingested regularly, it can combat some mental illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
  10. When used on underarm areas/armpits, coconut oil can act as a natural deodorant (Note: not necessarily an antiperspirant). The antibacterial nature of the oil kills odor causing bacteria.
  11. Rubbing coconut oil on your scalp multiple times a week can act as a growth aid for hair follicles, promoting them to produce healthier and thicker hair.
  12. Coconut oil is a natural immune booster.
  13. Coconut oil can improve insulin levels in diabetics.
  14. Coconut oil mixed with baking soda can actually be used as a very effective whitening toothpaste. It also aids in keeping enamel healthy.
  15. Coconut oil can be added to lotion (natural or otherwise) or used alone to treat psoriasis.
  16. Breast feeding? Rubbing coconut oil on nipples regularly can prevent painful chaffing.
  17. Coconut oil can be mixed with an essential oil to make a relaxing massage oil.

  22. Need help growing your eyelashes? Put some coconut oil on your lashes before using mascara to prevent breakage and before you go to bed to promote growth.
  23. Put a tablespoon or two of coconut oil in your bath water for a relaxing and moisturizing soak.
  24. Use coconut oil on minor wounds/burns to aid in a quicker healing time.
  25. Rub coconut oil on your feet to drastically soften and actually cut down on odor.
  26. Coconut oil is also great for combating unbalanced pH levels, and can actually help cure vaginal yeast infections and/or bacterial vaginosis.
  27. Coconut oil can be used to curb your appetite, aid in weight loss, and help you burn more calories.
  28. Coconut oil can improve cholesterol.
  29. Coconut oil can be used as a makeup remover. It not only will remove your makeup, but also leaves skin moisturized and glowing.
